Cebelle Wins 2 Golds and 1 Silver at World Taiji Quan Championships

Mandy Cebelle Chen from Sri KDU International Secondary School won 2 Gold medals and 1 Silver in the World Taiji Quan Championships, which was held in Sport Center Slayeykov, Burgas, Bulgaria from 25th September to 2nd October 2018. This biennial wushu competition saw 7 Taiji athletes from the Malaysia National Wushu Squad competing against international wushu exponents from China and Vietnam. At age 14, Cebelle is the youngest athlete to represent the country and had the honour to be the flag bearer for Team Malaysia in the opening ceremony.

In her first event, Cebelle gave her best to secure a silver medal (9.20 score) losing eventually to wushu power house China. However, she redeemed herself by digging deep into her reserves to defeat the recently crowned world junior champion from Vietnam to pick up her first gold medal in the Taiji Quan event with a score of 9.27. In her third Taiji Jian (Sword) event, armed with confidence and sheer precision, her hard work in training paid off when she was awarded a perfect score in execution marks and earned herself an additional gold medal (9.40 points), which was also the 9th gold medal for Malaysia. For that last gold effort, Malaysia surpassed previous editions of the championship with a total medal haul of 9 Gold, 9 Silver, 1 Bronze to make this the best ever results thus far.
