Hulu Langat Trip 10th – 12th November 2017
Last weekend students travelled to Hulu Langat for three days of training to prepare them for the qualifying Duke of Edinburgh expedition in March.
Students departed Sri KDU on the Friday morning and on arrival their first task was an uphill hike with all their equipment to the training area and campsite for the weekend. The rest of the day was taken up with briefings and training on putting up tents, packing rucksacks correctly, navigation, jungle craft, first aid, use of ropes and the principles of ‘Leave No Trace’ to cause minimal environmental damage. It started to rain heavily around 3:30 p.m. and did not stop until around 10:00 p.m. in the evening. However, there was shelter in which the students could carry out their training and cook their evening meal.
On Saturday there was relief from the rain but students still had to deal with hot and humid conditions during the day not to mention the odd leech and insect bite! On Sunday the teams packed up all their equipment then proceeded to hike through the rain forest solely reliant upon their navigational skills. After a debrief from their instructors they returned to SKIS, tired but in great spirits and ready for Cameron Highlands in March. This year the Silver group earned special praise from the instructors for their organisation, hiking and camping skills.
